Food Review: Freddy’s

One that’s been on our list for a while, we got a chance to try Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers while on Christmas Break. We’ve heard plenty of reviews about the restaurant but there’s never one nearby at lunchtime. The chain has over 500 locations in the United States, but only four in the state of New Jersey. While driving through the state, we pulled over to get gas and some food. We saw there was a franchise off in the distance and took the opportunity to see if it was any good.

How and What We Ordered

As long as they’re not allergic, our writers like to order the main item a business is known for. We ordered the the Original Double Combo as a to go order and the Bacon & Cheese Double Combo as a dine-in order. After about three minutes, one of the employees reached for the metal window microphone with the long and flexible stem. Politely, he called our order number and we collected the orders from the counter.

Presentation and Packaging

It’s always nice when fast food is prepared, well, fast. The dine-in order came in a classic plastic wire basket lined with paper. We don’t care for embellished food advertisement so we were thrilled to see the food looked nearly identical to its picture on the menu. The imperfections and creases in the burger buns brought more authenticity to the experience.

The to go order itself came in an insulated paper bag, the handle was folded to preserve heat. One of writers was excited to use one of these for food at home, so they went ahead and found a similar set online. Of course, bags like this one would eventually make the bun soggy, but we didn’t plan on waiting that long to eat. The paper bag came in a standard brown paper bag to hold napkins.

What We Liked

Mind you, this is our first time trying the restaurant so we we took a moment to admire the retro layout of the location. The cherry red booths with warped metallic trim put you back in what felt like the 50s/60s. It felt like all that was missing is for the staff to be wearing paper hats.

As for the food, it’s hard to disappoint when the food looks as advertised. The patties, across both meals, were served smashburger-style and seared to pack in flavor. We also like the uniques approach of mustard on the burger instead of ketchup. Where most burger chains default to ketchup, it was nice to see a business commit to its own style by using mustard. The burgers also has thick vertical slices of dill pickle to almost anchor the other ingredients in place. Where most burger joint opt for circular slices, it was refreshing to see this approach.

Conclusion

Overall, there’s not much to complain about at Freddy’s. If you’ve been to a standard fast food burger restaurant, then this experience should be familiar to you. Freddy’s makes its impression not only in its design and theme, but in its commitment to how they deliver food and what they truly believe is the best version of the burger. It’s fair to say that we at OTGM now understand what the enthusiasm is about.
